ISIN

The ISIN (International Securities Identification Number) is a 12-digit alphanumeric identifier that uniquely identifies securities worldwide. It is based on the ISO 6166 standard and enables the unambiguous trading of stocks, funds, or bonds. Its structure is as follows: The first two digits indicate the country of origin (for example, CH for Switzerland), followed by a nine-digit national identifier and a check digit.

Unlike exchange-specific codes, such as the German securities identification number (WKN), the ISIN provides a global standard. This facilitates clearing and settlement in international business, as every security has the same digital identity across all borders.
